St Andrew’s Day

St Andrew’s Day is a feast day held in honour of Scotland’s patron saint. Celebrations take place around the country on the 30 November and Edinburgh and the Lothians offers a fantastic range of events each year.

Celebrate Scotland’s National Day in the capital and join proud Scots who come together to enjoy the festivities.

Historic Scotland runs a Visit For Free event each year which offers free entry at several attractions with highlights in the past including Edinburgh Castle, one of the most visited castles in the country. Sitting proudly atop an extinct volcano, the castle is visible for miles around, a defining icon of the city. Visit to discover the beautiful chapel, Scotland’s glittering crown jewels, Scotland’s National War Memorial and panoramic views across Edinburgh.

Ceilidhs often take place on St Andrew’s Day as well meaning you can try some traditional Scottish country dancing. Whirl around the floor to lively tunes played by a local band. Whether you already know the steps or you are looking to learn, there is usually a ceilidh caller on hand to talk you through the dances.

East Lothian celebrates its role as birthplace of the Saltire in an annual festival of music, culture and heritage. Witness a re-enactment of the Saltire’s horseback journey from Athelstaneford to St Mary’s Kirk, sample the delights of the Haddington Farmers’ Market and enjoy a collaboration of Scottish music and literature.
