National Coffee Day

September 27th, 2012 · edinburgh

29th September is National Coffee Day

In Scotland we are famous for our Whisky and Iron Brew “our other national drink” however I beg to differ when you see how many coffee shops we have in every street in Edinburgh.

We all love our coffee in the office at Edinbugh Festival Apartments so here are some great coffee shops located next to some of our city centre Edinburgh Apartments that I would recommend to our guests staying coming for a short break that need a wee caffeine fix to kick start the day.

Starting with our Edinburgh Townhouse which sleeps 22 people all in single beds,  we have a lovely French deli on the same street that does extremely nice filter coffee and only 95p which you can enjoy with lovely fresh baked croissants.

Over at our Lothian Road Edinburgh Apartment which sleeps 20 people we have a Starbucks coffee shop and also a new addition of a Frisky Frozen Yogurt ice-cream shop which also does really nice coffee. Make sure you try the chocolate flavour with fresh raspberries it is Divine and calorie free!!

Our George IV Residence Edinburgh Apartment is right next to the very famous Elephant House coffee shop where JK Rowling penned the start of her Harry Potter books.

Down on the Royal Mile we have a few different sizes of holiday apartments like 17 Fishmarket Close Edinburgh Apartment that has two double bedrooms and 249 Cannongate Edinburgh Apartment that sleeps 10 these are both a stones throw away from Plasir Du Chocolat and Chocolate Soup both of which are great little coffee houses.

Back over at the West End of town we have two great townhouse apartments at 16 Grove Street Edinbrugh Apartment and 31 Grove Street Edinburgh Apartment which are both really spoiled for  choice at the top of the street we have a lovely independent coffee shop called Cuthberts who screen old black and white movies in the Evenings and at the bottom of the street their is a great little coffee shop called Fresh who have some really unique sandwich fillings.

My favourite coffee shop in Edinburgh is only a ten minute pleasant walk away from these apartments and its well worth walking up an appetite, Falko Konditormiester a German coffee shop with the very best pot of filter coffee, superb sandwiches and the most amazing Black Forrest Gateaux I have ever had in my life, the cherries are oozing pure kirsch a visit to Edinburgh is really worth taking the time out to go there for brunch or lunch or afternoon cake.

Edinburgh Apartments Mid Week Madness

September 24th, 2012 · edinburgh

Because we live in a socitey where the majority of us work 9 till 5 Monday to Friday we tend to take our weekend breaks Friday to Sunday. However there are a large number of people now booking with us at Edinburgh Festival Apartments to stay during the week when we can offer much better rates. Here are some examples of some groups that visited our Edinburgh Apartments recently during the week to accomodate their budget.

We had a group of nurses who opted to come to Edinburgh Monday to Wednesday and stay in our Edinburgh Hen Party Townhouse Apartment – there were 22 nurses who all work shifts so it was easier for them to allocate holidays and come during the week.

The girls arrived on the Monday lunchtime and had their shopping delivered from Asda for their arrival at the Edinburgh Townhouse along with plenty of booze. They later headed out to The Hive Nighclub to dance the night away, free entry and £1 a drink helped them all get in the mood. The next day the girls left the Edinburgh Townhouse and all went for a pamper day and had a massage and manicures before heading for a scrumptious Italian Meal a great time was had by all and the entire break including food shopping, massage and meal cost them each an unbelievable £80 each.  The Edinburgh Townhouse is such a  great price during the week it even works out great if you don’t have 22 people to bring. Remember you have the entire house, lounge, kitchen, 7 ensuite bedrooms all for only £20 each per night – if there are a few less of you its just a little bit more each – booking the Edinburgh Townhouse during the week is actually cheaper than booking a hostel.

Another group we had were some Irish students who were having a get together before term time started and wanted to stay two nights Wednesday to Friday.  They arrived on the Wednesday morning at our Edinburgh Apartment Lothian which has a fantastic big lounge where they could have a party and also 4 bedrooms with 20 single beds. They didn’t want to plan any of the break so they could all go with the flow but had a great time partying in the Edinburgh Apartment and they were only a five minute walk down to the popular student bars and clubs in the Grassmarket area many of which are open till 3am – the Lothian Apartment Edinburgh only cost them £20 each per night and they had been lucky enough to buy Ryan-air flights for under £50 so a definite bargain for under £100 including flights.

We also had a family staying with us last week who were having a late Summer holiday and were so lucky because the weather was actually really nice. The family of two adults and four teenagers 2 boys and 2 girls arrived on the Monday and stayed until the Friday in our Royal Mile Edinburgh Apartment which was ideal for them with one double bedroom and the teenagers  each having a bedroom each to share. The apartment is really central so they could walk to all the tourists sites and the whole family holiday cost less than £1000 working out at only £40 each per day.

If you are a budget conscious traveler or group coming to Edinburgh please get in touch with our team at Edinburgh Festival Apartments and we can best advise you which Edinburgh Apartment will suit you best and what is going on in Edinburgh city, remember Edinburgh is very busy during the week with students so our nightclubs are busy every night of the week with many doing drink promos for around £1 a drink Monday to Thursday.

Whats on now in Edinburgh

September 21st, 2012 · edinburgh

I have been away myself on holiday from Edinburgh Festival Apartments for the last couple of weeks so it was really strange the very first day I came back to our office at Edinburgh Festival Apartments and some of our guests checking in asked what there was going on in Edinburgh city!

For once I didn’t know so I have been doing some digging about to see what is going on for the following month in Edinburgh and things that are within walking distance of our most popular Edinburgh Apartments.

Firstly we have starting this week the latest version of Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s phenomenal musical Phantom of the Opera - its an ideal highlight for the weekend for our guests staying at our Edinburgh Playhouse Apartment which sleeps up to 13 people. This is a luxurious Edinburgh City Centre Apartment located on Hopetoun Street which is just a 10 minute walk from Princes Street. This  4* Apartment has four bedrooms and three bathrooms with a fully fitted kitchen and spacious lounge with  TV, DVD player and Free View. Its just 5 minutes by taxi from Edinburgh Waverley Station and benefits from Free secure car parking available on site.

In the Edinburgh Festival Theatre we have Scotlands very own rags to riches story of Susan Boyle where the dynamic Elaine C Smith plays the part of Susan in I Dreamed a Dream. There cant be many people who have not heard the story of Susan Boyle and her launch to fame in Britains Got Talent, the show tells a touching story of Susan Boyles humble beginnings in the small town of Blackburn, where she still lives through to her global stardom featuring many of her hit songs.

Our George IV Residence Edinburgh Apartment is just a 5 minute walk from the theatre and is an ideal venue for a group of girls looking for a great city break taking in a show, shopping and restaurants. This Large Georgian Edinburgh Apartment is the closest we have to Edinburgh castle. It sleeps up to 15 people and is centrally located on George the IV bridge. Its an ideal base for families and groups looking to enjoy themselves in historical Edinburgh, just 5 minutes from Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh Museum, The Festival Theatre and a whole range of walking tours, whiskey tours and more restaurants and bars than you will ever be able to visit even if you stayed for a month! It has four bedrooms all with single beds, a large fully fitted kitchen and lounge with 2 bathrooms including one with a Jacuzzi bath.

Edinburgh Apartment Eating Out Guide

September 18th, 2012 · edinburgh

Here at Edinburgh Festival Apartments we love our grub and so would like to tell you about some of our favorite eating places in and around Edinburgh City along with the nearest Edinburgh Apartment we have to the venue.

DAVID BANN – Edinburghs Vegetarian five star restaurant with rave reviews, on St Mary Street which is ideal for groups staying at our Edinburgh Royal Mile apartment which sleeps 10 people. Try the Olive polenta with roasted vegetables and goats curd – its lush.

For pre dinner drinks try  The Cannons-gait and afterwards try The Holyrood Tavern, just round the corner doesn’t look much but they do a mean “bramble” cocktail.

MOTHER INDIA – A trendy new concept of Indian tapas, I still think tapas should only be Spanish however I do love this place, you can order a few little dishes and leave not feeling too full up like the usual Indian feeling. Its an ideal starting point for groups of guys staying at our Edinburgh Stag HQ at George IV Bridge before maybe heading up to Malones Bar for some late night live music.

THE TOWER – has to be Edinburgh’s finest restaurant with a chic interior, amazing views and a roof terrace. The menu has some of Scotland’s freshest seafood and Scottish beef with an even better wine list. This would be an ideal place for a couple on a romantic break staying at our 17 Royal Mile Edinburgh Apartment.

CENTOTRE – another great venue from Edinburghs Crolla family Centotre (pronounced chent-a-chay) produces high-quality Italian food, from pizza and pasta to Milanese-style veal with the most amazing Rumbaba! A perfect venue for ladies who like to lunch staying at our Rose Street Residence Edinburgh Apartment that sleeps 16 people. After wards you can head down to Tiger Lily for some cocktails.

THE DOGS – a strange name for a foodie place but this place is defo the dogs b*ll*cks! Proper fresh food at great value prices with a trendy mix of people. A great food venue for our large groups of guys staying at our Edinburgh Lothian Road Apartment, afterwards head down to Club Tropicana to dance the food off.

OUTSIDER – one of my personal favorites, whatever you have try the pink coleslaw it is to die for! Its right beneath our George IV Residence Edinburgh Apartment where you will be spoiled for choice on places to go afterwards, but try Espionage for a late night boogie on five different floors.

GHILLIE DHU – this is a great venue for tourist looking for a modern Scottish night. A cool, trendy bar with modern folk music and upstairs a lively dance venue with Ceilidhs on a Friday night – they even had a naked one on the opening night – yikes! For girls staying at our Edinburgh Hen Party Lothian Apartment this will be an ideal venue.

MONTEITH’S – again one of my own personal favorites, but more for a romantic night. Ideal for a couple staying at our Edinburgh Castle Snug Apartment on the Royal Mile. The restaurant is hidden down a close just a few yards from the main tourist street, this is one of the Old Town’s better-kept secrets. The atmosphere is romantic thanks to the arch of fairy lights as you enter the close. You just have to have a Hendricks pot of “blossom tea”.

The End of Edinburgh Festival 2012

September 5th, 2012 · edinburgh

The Edinburgh festival season came to a magnificent conclusion on Sunday night when a huge Fireworks display, the Virgin Money Fireworks Concert combines passionate music from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with breathtaking pyrotechnics, specially choreographed by international fireworks artists to enhance the musical experience. It is all set against the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh’s historic castle. Sunday was a marvelous evening and many people enjoyed a picnic in the grounds of Princes Street gardens whilst enjoying the music and visual feast.

Our guests staying at George IV Bride Edinburgh Apartment enjoyed marvelous views of the castle from the window, the girls had booked the weekend as a Hen Party and didn’t realise the Fireworks were on until they arrived so an extra bonus for a fabulous end to their explosive weekend.

This year’s Virgin Money Fireworks Concert was feast of pageantry and patriotism, celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and also echoing the Festival’s Shakespearean offerings. Although it has to be said that numbers to the Festival were down  slightly, mainly due to the fact that a lot of people were attending the London Olympic games. Edinburgh was still bursting at the seems and we have  been very busy here at Edinburgh Festival Apartments with lots of late bookings for families looking to stay in one of our many Royal Mile Edinburgh apartments so that they can be nearby all the attractions.

Here at Edinburgh Festival Apartments we have also had an increase in new landlords deciding to rent their property with holiday rentals rather the student lets or long term lets. It is true that there is a bit more work involved cleaning, bedding etc but if you have a property its a great way to make it pay for its self and in turn you can meet a whole range of people.

One such property is Gilmours Entry which is located in Newington and has two double bedrooms with a double sofa bed in the lounge. Its a great family apartment, an ideal Festival venue for those looking to be close to Bristo Square. We already have people looking for Edinburgh Apartments next years Edinburgh Festival 2013.

49. Edinburgh Royal Mile Group Accommodation – for the bigger families or groups how about this 10 single bed apartment?

50. Edinburgh Niddry Street South Apartment – last but not least this is a great apartment for couples having their wedding reception in The Caves, this apartment is right next door!

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen my very own Fifty Shades of Apartments available to rent short or long term in the Edinburgh City and of course if you have not found what you are looking for just drop us an email or give us a phone and tell me what it is you want, where and for how much and our team at Edinburgh Apartments will do there very best to find exactly what you are after.

We are also always looking for new landlords as we frequently do not have enough properties for the busy rugby weekend, Festival period and of course Edinburgh’s amazing Hogmanay party that goes on for a nigh a week.

Many of our landlords have several apartments and are very professional in their business approach, keeping the apartments tip top and up to date in fashionable colour schemes. We also have a good selection of independent landlords who perhaps have decided to let out their home whilst they travel the world to exotic places far and wide. What ever your reason for not wanting to stay in your own home don’t let it go to waste let it pay for itself with holiday makers who will enjoy your home and pay you for the pleasure of doing so.

We have one landlord who has a great townhouse that can be rented for a Friday, Saturday and Sunday and he goes of traveling in his camper van then comes back and stays in the house during the week which gives him loads of time to clean it, repair it or refurbish it in time for his next lot guests, what a great lifestyle business he can enjoy in his early retirement whilst making money and not dipping into his savings.

So like I say don’t hesitate to get in touch whether you are a guest or landlord we are here to help you make the choice right for you and help you secure or let the apartment in Edinburgh of your choice.

Fifty Shades of Grey

August 27th, 2012 · edinburgh

As we  all know there has been a  frenzy going on about Fifty Shades of Grey and I really felt I have to write something about it. I am sure all of you will have heard about it unless you are like my teenage son who has been working up in the outer Hebrides this year and wondered what my teenage daughter was giggling about when my friend brought in her copy for me to borrow, How sweet he had no idea about this new phenomena that has taken over Harry Potter!

I have to be honest I haven’t read it yet as I am keeping it for my holidays at the start of September :-)

However I read a bit about the story which is and erotic novel by British author E.L. James set in Seattle, Fifty Shades of Grey is the first installment in a trilogy that follows the relationship between college graduate Anastasia and young business magnate Christian Grey.

I have also noticed now that everything has moved away from the M&S marketing genius of “we are no ordinary ….” to Fifty shades of anything!

Six Nations 2013

August 24th, 2012 · edinburgh

After a disappointing Six Nations campaign in 2012, Scotland will be looking to improve in 2013 and we at Edinburgh Festival Apartments are looking forward to welcoming the supporters to next years home fixtures.  We will welcome Italy returning to Murrayfield on Saturday 9th of February 2013 and already have a good range of Italian families who have booked apartments  in the Royal Mile and a small rugby team who have booked our Edinburgh Townhouse where they can walk to Murrayfield from Haymarket.

We have a huge amount of Italians living in Edinburgh dating back to the 19th century. For some it was thought as a stopping point en-route to America. The main reasons Italians sought a new life was as a direct result of poor economic conditions. Poverty was rife and living conditions were harsh, with famine and sometimes droughts. Many came to Scotland and could not get work so started their own businesses often selling door to door from these businesses there are many well known business in Edinburgh and Scotland such as  Nardini’s in Largs boasted a beautiful Art Deco and selling amazing ice-cream and  Valvona & Crolla the famous delicatessen based in Edinburgh just round the corner from our Edinburgh Playhouse Apartment that sleeps 13 people.

The Six Nations Championship is without doubt the greatest rugby tournament on earth followed quickly by the greatest drinking festival in Edinburgh after each game. Each year the collective fans of each team share in the passion and excitement of this feast of rugby whether watching the game at Murray-field or watching in one of the many outdoor bar venues like The Three Sisters.

Here at Edinburgh Festival Apartments we have a constant stream of Irish visitors who take advantage of the cheap and frequent Ryan-air flights on offer. By all accounts the Southern Irish find it far cheaper to come here for a weekend away of shopping and boozing than going into their own fair city of Dublin. The Irish arrive on the 24th of February 2013 and great fun and craich is had by all, Scottish women just love the Irish accent so you can be sure that the bars and clubs will be full of lots of pretty ladies looking for some fun.

This year we have two groups of dedicated rugby players and supporters who come to Edinburgh Festival Apartments every alternate year and take over our two Edinburgh rugby apartments at 31 Grove street and 16 Grove Street. The guys booked up just as they left in  2011.

It has to be said the Celtic connections are strong in Scotland with almost everyone having a granny from Ireland, an Irish name or some kind of link to Ireland this is sure to continue with so many cheap Ryan-air flights and the ferry link.

We wont have quite recovered from the onslaught of the Irish weekend when we at Edinburgh Festival Apartments will welcome last but not least the Welsh on Saturday 8th of March 2013.

Oh my God this is by far the busiest weekend of the whole year with the whole of Wales descending upon the Scottish Capitol for practically the whole week – is this an official bank holiday in Wales now?

No sooner had Scotland been handed the “wooden spoon” and Wales won the Grand Slam that the phones started ringing off the hook with practically all our Edinburgh Festival Apartments been booked for mainly 3 night stays so that the Welsh could guarantee their accommodation. We are still getting people looking and truthfully we don’t have much left for that weekend so if any of you landlords in Edinburgh don’t have your property on our Festival Apartments website for the 8th of March 2013 let us know!!!

I really cant believe there are going to be any people left in Wales that weekend when Edinburgh will become an array of all different kinds of people wearing red, with daffodils or leeks adorned. Luckily for lots of our guests or apartments are all located at the West End of Edinburgh which means they can walk to Murray-field on the day of the match and enjoy the atmosphere of the Welsh impromptu choirs coming from all the hotels and bars en-route to Murray-field Stadium, this is one match I have to admit I have never been too but would truly love to do so if anyone knows of any tickets going spare I would love one :-) And honestly I would be just as happy for Wales or Scotland to win :-)

Lads night out in Edinburgh

August 22nd, 2012 · edinburgh

Here are Edinburgh Apartments we try to cater for all kinds of different groups, many hotels, hostels and apartments don’t like having large groups of boys / men however we do find they are all very nice, not as noisy or as messy as the girls so Festival Apartments welcome Stag Parties to Edinburgh, here is our idea of what you might be looking for.

How to start your weekend and night out whilst staying with Edinburgh Festival Apartments?

That’s all ways one of the important aspects of the night, just as important as to which Edinburgh Apartment you are going to stay in?

But where on your Stag party weekend in Edinburgh should you begin?

If your staying in one of our Edinburgh City Centre townhouse or Apartments, your are really spoilt for choice on venues, bars and clubs. You can decide to have your pre-drinks at a private bar located right next to most our Edinburgh Apartments. If your adventurous lot you might prefer to start your night in the busy and economically priced, local nightclubs that open early doors with drinks promos from as little as £1 – after shock here we go!

If you happened to be staying at our Lothian Road apartments for instance. You may like to begin your night at the Rutland Bar and Grill or Hudson’s on the West End. Both offer reasonably priced food and drinks and are about a ten-minute walk from Edinburgh’s more high-end nightclub district, George Street.

For the guys who spent more on their wife-to-be s wedding dress than their stag do, they could begin there night at Shakespeare’s on Lothian Road,  or the nearby Lebowski’s named after the one and only dude, Jeff Lebowski. These lively and cheap bars are just a stones through away from Edinburghs Little Soho district, “where the meals are deals and the girls wear clear heals” ;) .

Moving on from the first two rounds and a sneaky lap dance you might find yourself in Edinburghs grassmarket, the perfect setting for the world ending pub crawl. Also really close to our George IV Stag party apratment which sleeps 15 and our Royal Mile apartment which sleeps 10 – all with single beds which is a bonus when you have had a few too many, seriously no one really wants bunk beds these days do they?

Street after street of age old pubs and clubs of sheer awesomeness, leading on your way to Edinburgh’s alternative and student ridden club scene. With infamous bars like The Three Sisters a warren of nooks and crannies to loose yourselves in before heading to Espionage which is based over 5 floors, be warned you will loose all your friends unless you have rope to tie you all together and double warning there are no mobile signals in this classy joint!

If you chose on the other the other hand the George Street option you may like to lead yourself through Rose street, the narrow backstreet behind the tram clogged vein of Princes Street. Rose street offers a half-mile of despondent bars, comedy clubs and the odd sauna (for those tired feet ;) ) I recommend taking the back entrance into the Standing Order. After a pint or 3 you’ll definitely be ready for the night clubs, which conveniently is where the Stand and Order leads onto you have a choice of Why-not, El Barrio or for the oldies The Jam House with an amazing house band.

Mood Nightclub is not far from there also and has a good range of bars in the Omni centre, the bonus for this venue is a late night chippy and taxi rank, nowadays policed by the very friendly taxi marshalls which make us all gratefull for the fact that we could actually have a worse job and be a taxi marshal!

During the day our Stag Edinburgh team can also organize a whole range of activities from paint-balling to highland games, whisky tasting to ghost tours whatever kind of “thing” you guys are into we have the contacts to get it all sorted for you with just one easy payment to us we will book it all, send you all the directions and instructions and even organise the transfers for you if you are opting for white water rafting up in Aberfeldy or Clay Pigeon Shooting over in Fife.

Another cheeky little thing we can organize at Stag Party Edinburgh is an exotic dancer to your apartment as a surprise for the stag – or as we done recently a dwarf dressed as an oomphaloompa and hand cuffed to a 6ft 5 giant, they had such a laugh.
