August 11th, 2008 · No Comments · world

Russia’s invading army was last night accused of being bent on Georgia’s ‘annihilation’ as desperate pleas for a halt to days of bloody violence looked doomed.

bombs rained down on the outskirts rained down of the capital Tbilisi, hitting the main passenger airport hours before the arrival of an international peace mission. And as Georgian soldiers fled the breakaway region of South Ossetia under a devastating bombardment, the country begged its neighbour for a reprieve.

President Mikhail Saakashvili tried to rally international support against ‘an unprovoked, brutal invasion’ while in UN ambassador warned of the ‘extermination of the Georgian population’.

Russia invaded South Ossetia on Thursday after Mr Saakashvili moved to quell separatists.

Thousands are thought to have died in the fighting, with Georgia reporting widespread ‘loss of innocent lives’.
