On the fourth day of Christmas at Edinburgh Festival Apartments

December 13th, 2012 · edinburgh

Four calling birds which refers to the four gospels or the four Evangelists however in the 19th century the actual words were “collie” birds referring to black birds and “collie” being the name  in England for a coal mine which is called a colliery and colly or collie is a derivation of this and means black like coal. For a long time in England, blackbirds have been referred to as both blackbirds (as in the nursery rhyme Sing a Song of Sixpence ) and colly birds as in The Twelve Days of Christmas .

Looking around our Edinburgh Apartments I was looking for an Edinburgh Apartment which reminded me of our Edinburgh Castle View Two Bedroom apartment the view from the apartment  looks over the Grassmarket area where there are always Blackbirds hanging about for tit bits.

This very impressive two bedroom Edinburgh apartment is ideal for four “birds” looking for a really comfortable weekend away in a very central Edinburgh Apartment right in the heart of Edinburgh’s old historic town centre. You are easily within walking distance of a wide choice of bars and excellent restaurants especially in Victoria Street. The girls will also be able to walk down to Princes Street for a wide range of excellent shopping including exclusive designer shops in George Street.

In the Grassmarket it will be of interest to you to take one of the Free walking tours on offer which will give you some of the history of the area and its gory past.

From 1477 until 1911 The Grassmarket was the main market for horse and cattle sales, it was also the area for public executions of witches, murderers and the like.

There are many bars with names relating to the history of the Grassmarket like The Last Drop where people were taken for their last drop of whisky before being hanged.

Or Maggie Dicksons pub named after the popular story in Edinburgh about Maggie Dickson a fishwife from Musselburgh who was hanged in the Grassmarket in 1728 for murdering her own baby. After her hanging her body was taken back to Musselburgh in a coffin however on the way there she awoke to the shock of her friends. However in under Scots law she had been given her punishment and therefore could not be hanged again, she was therefore allowed to go free.  Only at a later date were the words added to hangings to be hanged until dead! For the rest of her life she was known as half hangit Maggie.

There is now a pub named after Maggie situated on the Grassmarket which is directly opposite our Edinburgh Castle View Apartment.

On the Third Day of Christmas at Edinburgh Apartments

December 7th, 2012 · edinburgh

….my true love gave to me THREE FRENCH HENS – the meaning of which is actually Faith, Hope and Charity, the Theological Virtues.

This really gave me a giggle trying to think of an Edinburgh apartment to link to this!

I instantly had a vision of a Hen Party we had this year staying in our Edinburgh Hen Party Townhouse where all the girls arrived for the weekend dressed up as French Tarts - stripey t-shirts and red berets with strings of artificial onions!

The girls had a French theme all weekend and once settled in the Edinburgh Hen Party Townhouse they started off celebrations with a cheese and wine party served by their very own butler in the buff – ooh la la !!!!

Anyway back to The Three French Hens and which apartment do I think would be suited to three ladies?

Our Edinburgh Rose Apartment is an ideal location for ladies coming to Edinburgh to go shopping, located in Rose Street just between Princes Street and George Street this quaint two bedroom Edinburgh apartment is perfect for a few days away. A really personal home from home with a good sized lounge and two double bedrooms.

You will be spoilt for choice your choice of restaurants staying in this Edinburgh Apartment there are hundreds of bars and restaurants in this quaint little street locally nick named “The Amber Mile”.

The street behind this Edinburgh Apartment is George Street where again you will find a huge array of bars and restaurants not too mention some fabulous luxury shops. If you are coming at Christmas time make sure you visit The Dome in George Street the Christmas decorations are out of this world and the scent of cinnamon as you walk through the door is overwhelming.

We really do have a great range of independent apartments in Edinburgh for you to choose from and our Festival Apartments staff are all local to Edinburgh so will always be able to give you the best advice on the best places to go whatever kind of holiday you are looking to have, all you have to do is drop them an email or give them a phone at our Edinburgh Apartments office.

On the Second day of Christmas at Edinburgh Apartments …..

December 6th, 2012 · edinburgh

Two Turtle Doves – well I have to be honest no one here at Edinburgh Apartments really knew the meaning of “Two turtle Doves” so I had to Google the meaning.

Apparently Two Turtle Doves are supposed to represent a loving couple. They are usually pictures of Doves cuddled up to each other, and sometimes touching beaks. It supposed to mean new love, when a couple cuddles together and “coos” or whispers their love and secrets to each other. They are white to represent that the love must remain chaste until marriage.

This symbol came about during Victorian times and the growth of Valentines with the need to have symbols it represent different things.

With that in mind I thought I would link this blog to a Romantic Valentine Weekend in Edinburgh – next year Valentines day falls on the Thursday so an ideal way to have a long weekend in Edinburgh Apartments.

We have a huge range of one bedroom Edinburgh Apartments all over the city but in particular I would like to draw your attention to our Royal Mile Penthouse Edinburgh Apartments. We have two of these luxury apartments in the heart of the city with views over to Fife. Each Edinburgh Penthouse Apartment has a luxurious lounge with fully fitted kitchen and dining area with a spiral stair case leading up to the deluxe double bedroom with en-suite bathroom.

The Royal Mile Edinburgh Penthouse Apartments are decorated to a very high standard with calming creams, silver and black soft furnishings.

You may decide to go for a romantic meal on Thursday 14th of February 2013 and we highly recommend Monthieths award winning restaurant for a truly wonderful romantic Scottish meal.

On the Friday why not take a leisurely stroll from your Edinburgh Apartment up to Edinburgh Castle and have a look at the amazing view over the city. We can even arrange a romantic dinner and whisky tasting at The Scotch Malt Whisky Society where you can sample some of Scotland’s wonderful single cask whiskys and say “ooshkaba” to each other (cheers!)

I am sure by Saturday you will want to hit the shops – you can walk down from your Edinburgh Penthouse Apartment to a huge range of shops in Princes Street where you can choose from a huge range of budgets from Primark to Harvey Nichols the choice is yours. A trip to Edinburgh wont be complete without a visit to The Dome in George Street one of Edinburgh’s oldest banks which is now a scrumptious eatery and bar.

On Saturday evening I would recommend you visit The Jazz Bar on Chamber Street for some amazing live Jazz music again just a short walk from your Edinburgh Apartment.

The Edinburgh Apartment sleeps 4 people and comprises of 2 double bedrooms, one bedroom with a double bed and the other has two single beds so it will be ideal for us for the weekend and our friends who live in Edinburgh can come along and visit for a night out and stay over in the bedroom we wont be using.

I have booked us a meal at  Montieths an award winning Scottish restuarant and thought afterwards head to Whiski Bar to hear some live acoustic music.

On Saturday I thought we could go shopping and have afternoon tea at Harvey Nichols then later on head out to the Jazz Bar on Chamber Street where there is live music and we can wander home.
