This lovely 2-bedroom apartment is within an A-listed, 17th-century Scottish townhouse (built in 1638), which has a distinguished history and a wonderful literary connection with Robert Louis Stevenson
The Balfour Apartment occupies a commanding second-floor position in Pilrig House, offering impressive views of the entire park and front gardens from dual windows in the spacious living-room. The apartment has a light-filled and sunny ambience, is wonderfully comfortable and beautifully decorated.
Uniquely located in a tranquil park, it is only a 15-minute stroll, or 5 minutes by bus to Edinburgh's city centre and all the main tourist attractions: Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace (and Holyrood Park/Arthur's Seat), The National Art Gallery, Edinburgh's Botanical Gardens, The National Portrait Gallery, The Scottish Parliament, Calton Hill.
It is also near the River of Leith walkways, which lead to the 'Shore' area of the city - once a bustling port area, now a fashionable area with recommended restaurants and wine bars on the waterfront, and where the Royal Yacht Britannia is berthed. Guests can enjoy the private gardens, including a lovely Regency garden, which offers secluded seating areas and is teeming with wildlife - birds, squirrels and where, occasionally, the resident fox makes an appearance
The interior is beautifully furnished, impeccably clean & extremely comfortable, comprising: spacious living-room with designated dining area, two delightful window seats with views of the park, two bedrooms, both doubles - one with a super-king sized bed that can be split into singles (fully carpeted and equipped with hairdryers, alarm clock, adjustable heaters, US adapter plug); a fully-equipped kitchen with all the modern utensils you will require; and modern bathroom with shower screen/shower over the bath, heated towel rail and shaver point. For those interested in the past, Pilrig is a house of notable distinction and boasts a fascinating history - it was owned by, and home of, the same family - the Balfours - for hundreds of years. Robert Louis (Balfour) Stevensons grandfather, James Balfour, lived in the house, and RLS, one of Scotlands most acclaimed authors, visited the house and played in the gardens as a child. He mentions Pilrig House in many of his books and letters, including Kidnapped and Catriona. Included in the price: fine bedlinen, Egyptian cotton towels, utilities, Scottish toiletries; a full Welcome Pack and up-to-date Tourist information guides; phone; Pilrig House stationery & postcards, selection of novels/children's books, games, CDs/DVDs, and, on arrival, crystal decanter of whisky; refreshment tray, fresh flowers, chocolates and fruit bowl, as well as many other thoughtful extras.
